Service Area — Birmingham and Central Alabama

We cover Birmingham and the surrounding metro, which in practice means most of Jefferson County and the northern part of Shelby County. The list below is where we work most often; if your address is not on it, call and ask, because we regularly go beyond it.

Jefferson County

Birmingham itself, across all of its neighborhoods, from the older housing in Forest Park and Crestwood through to the newer developments on the edges of the city.

Homewood, where the 1920s to 1940s housing stock in Edgewood, Hollywood and Rosedale means crawl space work rather than slab work.

Mountain Brook, where steep lots, mature hardwoods and original finishes call for a more careful approach to lifting than a newer house needs.

Vestavia Hills, running along and over the crest of Shades Mountain, where hillside basements take lateral pressure from saturated clay uphill of them.

Hoover, the largest suburb in the metro, where most settlement traces back to cut-and-fill lots created when the subdivisions were graded.

Irondale and Leeds, on the eastern side, with a mixture of older pier-and-beam homes and newer slab construction.

Bessemer, to the west, where early twentieth-century housing on shallow footings has had a very long time to settle.

Shelby County

Alabaster, largely built from the 1980s onward on graded subdivision ground, where slab settlement is the common pattern.

Pelham, at the foot of Oak Mountain, where the slope moves water through the soil toward whatever is in its path.

Helena, one of the faster-growing parts of the county, where newer houses on recent fill produce some of the clearest settlement cases in the metro.

Why Location Changes the Diagnosis

It is not simply a matter of distance. A house in Homewood and a house in Helena have different foundations, different soil histories and different failure patterns, and a contractor who quotes the same package everywhere has not looked properly.

Older, closer-in neighborhoods generally mean pier-and-beam over crawl spaces, where the repair is under the floor. Newer outlying subdivisions generally mean slab-on-grade on engineered fill, where the repair is around the perimeter. Hillside properties anywhere in the metro add lateral water pressure to the picture.

Not Sure If You Are In Range

Call and ask. If you are outside the area we can usually still tell you from photographs whether what you are seeing looks structural, which is worth knowing before you go looking for someone closer to you.
