We think it is better to say that plainly on the About page than to bury it in small print. You are not being passed around a call center, and your details are not sold on to a list of competing companies who then all ring you.
What We Care About Getting Right
Diagnosis before quotation. The single most expensive mistake in this trade is buying the wrong repair — piers to fix a wall that is being pushed inward, or injection on a crack that is still moving. The direction of a crack and the pattern of movement tell you which problem you have, and that assessment should come before any number is discussed.
Cause before symptom. A large share of what gets diagnosed as structural failure in this metro starts as water in the wrong place. Correcting downspouts, grading and drainage costs a fraction of piering, and on a meaningful number of houses it is the actual fix. Any proposal that goes straight to the expensive option without looking at the drainage has skipped a step.
Telling people when they do not need work. Some cracking is concrete curing. Some movement stopped decades ago and is stable. If that is what your house shows, you should be told so.
What We Will Not Do
We will not price structural work over the phone as though it were a fixed product. We will not promise that a settled house can be lifted back to dead level regardless of what the finishes will tolerate. And we will not claim a crawl space can be made permanently free of mold, because spores exist in all air — what can be controlled is moisture.
Why Birmingham
The geology here makes this work more common than in most of the country. Expansive red clay, fifty-odd inches of rain a year arriving between hot dry spells, and a ridge-and-valley landscape that put a great many houses on cut-and-fill lots. Foundation movement in this metro is not bad luck, it is a predictable consequence of the ground, which is also why it is worth understanding rather than panicking about.
