Mold in a crawl space is a moisture symptom. Treating the growth without fixing what is feeding it produces a clean crawl space that looks the same again within a year, which is why the sequence in this work matters more than the products used.

Fungi need moisture, a food source and moderate temperatures. A vented crawl space under an Alabama summer supplies all three continuously: humid outside air condensing on cool surfaces, bare earth releasing vapor, and untreated softwood framing to feed on.
Wood at or above roughly twenty percent moisture content will support growth. In a wet crawl space here, joists and subfloor commonly sit well above that from May through September.

Structural assessment matters. Wood that has been wet long enough to grow visible fungal decay may have lost strength, and treating the surface does not restore that. Soft, crumbling or spongy timber needs replacing or sistering, not cleaning.
Treatment and Prevention
Removing contaminated materials that cannot be cleaned — most commonly wet fiberglass insulation and cardboard or stored boxes.
Cleaning affected timber surfaces, generally by physical removal methods appropriate to the substrate, followed by an antimicrobial treatment. Painting or encapsulating coatings can be used on cleaned timber.
Then, and this is the part that determines whether it comes back: fixing the moisture. Drainage where there is liquid water, a sealed vapor barrier over the earth, sealed vents, and a dehumidifier sized for the space.
A Word on Claims
Be cautious of anyone offering to make a crawl space permanently mold-free, or selling fogging treatments as a standalone solution. Spores are present in all outdoor and indoor air and cannot be eliminated. What can be controlled is moisture, and a contractor whose proposal is mostly treatment with little moisture work has the emphasis backward.
